Scoliosis Q&A

What is scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a condition that causes curvature in the spine. It can occur in different areas of the spine and the curve can be from side to side or from front to back. In some cases, the spine may also be rotated on its axis. Scoliosis can occur in differing degrees and should be monitored closely to avoid progression and more serious medical issues.

Does scoliosis always require a brace?

No, only the more severe forms may require bracing as well as scoliosis that is rapidly progressing in young children. Many types of scoliosis are mild and may not require bracing.

What symptoms does scoliosis cause?

Scoliosis can cause different symptoms at different degrees of severity. The most common symptoms include back and neck pain, but in people with very significant scoliosis, the curvature can affect the lungs and even the heart. Children, adolescents and teens with scoliosis – even very mild cases – should be monitored frequently to ensure the condition doesn't progress.

What causes scoliosis?

Most cases of scoliosis have no known specific cause (idiopathic scoliosis), although heredity and medical, environmental or lifestyle issues affecting growth and development of the spine are believed to play roles. Other patients may develop scoliosis as a result of trauma, surgery, degenerative diseases, birth defects or neuromuscular diseases.

How is chiropractic care used to treat scoliosis?

After conducting a physical exam and discussing you symptoms, Dr. Lichy will develop a treatment that's customized for your needs, and which may include exercises and stretching, physical therapy to help strengthen the spine and reduce pain, chiropractic adjustments to release pressures, electrical muscle stimulation and gentle stretching exercises that can be performed at home. If the exam indicates your condition is progressing, Dr. Lichy can refer you to a specialist for more invasive treatment options such as surgery.
